Grandmother of the Century
A Celebration of Life by Her Grandchildren

A Poem by Dara Littig

As if it were yesterday...

Sitting in grammy's tub, my toys floating and bobbing.

The bubbles crowding around me in the warm, safe water.

My Bert and Erni book swaying on the ripples of my splashing.

My foam letters squawking as I plaster them on the tile walls.

Colorful boats and cups overflowing then sinking.

When my chin and knees are washed, I'm coaxed by grammy

to finally get out.

She wraps me in a towel like a warm, fuzzy burrito.

I look down at my fingers, observing the mountainous wrinkles.

What are those?

Prunies.

Will they every go away?

In time.

Though wrinkles have faded, the memories have not.

Brian remembers Grandma's never ending service to her family and though Brian knows heaven is perfect, that if God needed it organized or cleaned or if God needed fed, Gram would be doing that right now.  He will miss her banana cream pie!

Three words that best describe my grandma were supportive, loving, and caring.  The thing I will always remember my grandma most for is being there whenever she could to support me at my baseball games.  I loved looking over at the bleachers and seeing her and my grandfather cheering and supporting me.  My grandma did all she could to treat our family with love and kindness.  One of the ways she enjoyed doing that is making us baked goods.  Anything from cookies to cake to pie to home made bread, it was all delicious and as well as her presence in our lives is going to be greatly missed.  My grandma always had a blast at the beach.  She loves the water.  She would take my cousins, my brother and I down to the beach whenever we asked.  She loved to stand in the water and get knocked over by waves and she would stand up and laugh.  She made the beach a fun and exciting family vacation every year.  My grandma has done many things for many people that will be greatly missed, but she will always be in our hearts.

About my grandma, I will remember most the way she used to cook or bake my favorites for my birthday.  I will also remember the cookies she baked for every holidays but more specifically Christmas.  I know that she spent a lot of time on those cookies and they are one of my favorite parts of Christmas.  Also, when the family used to get together for dinner all the different choices of food to eat so that everyone would like something because she wanted to make sure that everyone was happy.  I will also remember all the fun we had at the beach in North Carolina, swimming in the ocean or just talking around the table.  We had lot of fun in the ocean with her when the waves knocked us down again and again.  She also baked wonderful breakfast coffee cakes and muffins to bring to the beach and she put out an assorted plateful every day.

Grandma was always a huge part of my life.  Her house was my second home.  When I was little she used to massage my hands and feet until I fell asleep.  Starting in first grade she picked me up almost every week at school for lunch.  We continued meeting for lunch regularly and would often go shopping as well.  Grandma would attend as many of my sporting and school events as possible.  I know I will always hear her cheering for me.  I will miss her greatly, for life will not be the same without her, but she will always be in my heart, my special Grammy.

In loving memory of Ruth
